BRANCH HISTORY
The
idea for West Houston Evening Branch (WHEB) began in
1980, when it became apparent that many new families
moving to the Houston area were settling into the
west side. The women in the area wanted to be part
of such a great organization, but geographically it
only was practical to move the organization to the
prospective members rather than the other way
around. So, in

West Houston Evening Branch is a small group of committed professional women who have the benefit of being able to participate in diverse activities, such as our WHAM (West Houston Assistance Ministries) efforts.
WHEB is the Lead for Human Traffic Stop collection and delivered a trunk load of nonperishable food and diapers donated by Members of Day Branch and CYW.
I would like to introduce myself since very few of you know me and I became President of WHEB earlier than I thought. More…
As we begin to plan activities for the upcoming program year,
West Houston Evening Branch would like to explore the possibilities
of new program topics and possible special interest groups.
We are asking for input from West Houston Evening Branch members
so that we can plan activities that complement the interests
of you – our members. More…

TIRELESS NCJW SUPPORTER HONORED
WITH ISABELLE NOVITT AWARD
On Saturday, Feb. 4, more than 30 came together to celebrate the branch’s birthday and the presentation of the Isabelle Novitt Award. This award is designed to thank someone who has given of herself, her talents and her time to a WHEB project. A legacy to Isabelle Novitt, a woman who made those she met feel good about themselves, the award is designed to carry on that tradition.
West Houston Evening Branch’s Isabelle Novitt Award was presented to Karen Olener at this year’s celebration, held at the home of Debbie Simon More…

Two
client stories shared by Shirley
Downing, Executive Director and CEO of
WHAM:
|
|
A
30 yr old single mother is raising her
son and her younger sister.
Mom works for
a medical supply company and is trying
to make ends meet. She
applied for child support and recently
found out her son’s dad is incarcerated.
There is no other family to turn to, so
she asked her sister to find a part-time
job to help out. WHAM was able to
help with food, clothing and Christmas
toy voucher for the son. (WHAM
usually can help a family with food for
up to 2 weeks until they find additional
assistance).
|
|
A single mother
with children ages, 19, 18, 17 and 9 yr
old works part-time as home health aide.
Children had
received Social Security Insurance
checks from their father but he is no
longer in the picture and even with his
income it still wasn’t enough. Mom
has added stress because oldest son was
shot at the end August while walking his
little sister through their apartment
complex. The brother tried to
shield his sister from the bullets and
suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his
face and body. The man that shot
him was recently caught so justice was
served. Crime Victims is helping
by paying the son’s medical bills, but
mom has applied for Social Security
Disability because he is still bed
ridden and she has to be the caregiver.
To apply for disability they have to
suspend all other checks temporarily
which has caused a hardship on the
family. WHAM was able to help them
with food and adopt them for Christmas.
