This has been a very exciting year for the Concerned Young Women Branch. A number of new members with energy and enthusiasm have been a wonderful asset to our branch. Community service has been the main focus for Concerned Young Women this year. In December CYW hosted a very yummy event--a holiday cookie swap. More than 14 women brought their favorite cookies and treats and traded off to take a variety home. Jackie Pontello, Executive Director of Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA), was at the event and shared wonderful stories about the impact NCJW makes in the lives of the women and children AVDA serves. CYW was proud to present her with $170 in gift cards for AVDA's clients. In January almost 20 women got together to make more than 40 no-sew fleece baby blankets for the Human Traffick Stop Provisional Supply Bank, which provides basic necessities to victims of human trafficking. This March CYW will host a members-only appreciation event. E.I. Thomas, the owner and chef of Edloe St. Café, will teach us how to whip up an easy, yet impressive, dinner. This event is free for paid CYW members. In April CYW will host the second annual NCJW PAIR Career Day to talk one-on-one with high school student refugees about attending college, pursuing various careers, and the importance of following their dreams. Partnership for the Advancement and Immersion of Refugees (PAIR) provides educational and informational services to refugees in Houston. This is a great way to inform and inspire young refugee students who are facing cultural and educational adjustments here in the states. We are always reaching out to new members. If you or someone you know would like to be involved with our branch, it's easy to stay connected with us: 1) E-mail us at prescyw@ncjwhouston.org to join our mailing list or 2) Join our Facebook page "NCJW Concerned Young Women."
Concerned Young Women is
exactly that - a group of courageous, compassionate,
and powerful young women dedicated to making a
change in our community. We come
from diverse backgrounds. We are
single women, wives, mothers, professionals, and
community leaders, but we all have one thing in
common - we are thinkers and doers.
Guided by Jewish values, we are unafraid to
take a stand on progressive issues in order to
protect the rights of women, children, and families.
